“Welcome to WordPress! This is your first post.” Normally, I would tear down the default ‘hello world’ announcement of a software tool, whether it’s C code in Visual Studio or the default MOTD in a *nix install.
In this case, expanding on it seems appropriate. In the past, I had written my own blogging tools. A system reconfiguration took that blog down and reinstalling all of the infrastructure would have been a bit of work and ongoing maintenance.
Instead, over coffee I asked a friend who works in the field (Tim Marsolais) and he suggested WordPress as a platform,Jetpack for bot/spam security, and codepen if I wanted to look at UI elements.
A few minutes of effort later, here we are. About the only speedbump was trying to ‘connect’ my domain (WordPress.com’s term), which I already had through another registrar. Their strongly encouraged default is to ask for a transfer code and it was a bit of a help file search and UI mess to only authorize the A and C records they needed (automatic popup since the domain is with Google). I needed to delete the domain with WordPress and re-add it.
My only other notes so far are that I needed to turn off the don’t-sell-my-data toggle, some analytics, and the privacy notice for Akismet’s comment support.
